Stages of Deceased-Donor Organ Donation
- Declaration of brain death
- The organ transplant coordinator meets with the patient's relatives
- The National Coordination System is notified and urgent cases are identified
- After consent to donation, teams, the donor operation, and allocation of organs are planned
- Organs are retrieved from the deceased donor during the procurement operation
- Organs are transported and transplanted into recipients at the accepting transplantation centers
Donated organs are allocated by the National Coordination System to the most suitable recipient, based on medical urgency and tissue compatibility.
No distinction is made between organ transplantation centers in this process. Likewise, no discrimination whatsoever is made between patients on waiting lists on the basis of wealth, race, sex, or similar characteristics.
